New York City’s Mayoral Election Sparks a Worldwide Online Firestorm, Driven by the Bold and Charismatic
33-Year-Old Candidate Zohran Mamdani

The Dynamic Indian-Origin Politician, Son of Acclaimed Filmmaker Mira Nair, Fearlessly Challenges 67-Year-Old Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in a High-Stakes NYC Mayoral Showdown, Rallying for Bold Solutions to the City’s Skyrocketing Cost-of-Living Crisis While Dominating the Digital Stage with an Electrifying Social Media Presence

Zohran Mamdani, a trailblazing Indian-origin politician, clinched the Democratic primary for NYC mayor, positioning himself to potentially become the city’s first South Asian Muslim leader, boldly weaving his heritage into his vibrant campaign.

Championing progressive causes like rent freezes, free public transit, universal child care, and wealth taxes to boost public welfare, Mamdani’s grassroots energy, Gen Z appeal, and striking campaign style have electrified supporters but deeply divided the internet. While former President Donald Trump branded him a “radical communist,” Senator Bernie Sanders passionately endorsed his transformative vision.

Mamdani’s Political Arena

A powerhouse trio of progressive U.S. senators Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, and Bernie Sanders has thrown their unwavering support behind Zohran Mamdani, with Sanders hitting the streets to energize crowds and amplify Mamdani’s bold vision for New York City.

Omar celebrated Mamdani’s commanding Democratic primary victory as a resounding triumph of a grassroots, people-powered movement, proclaiming, New Yorkers, you’ve shown the world that courage prevails over bigots and corrupt billionaires this victory belongs to every one of you! Mamdani’s momentum extends far beyond the political sphere, drawing electrifying endorsements from cultural icons and influencers like supermodel and actor Emily Ratajkowski and celebrated comedian Kaneez Surka.

In a dynamic, widely shared reel filmed alongside Mamdani, Ratajkowski passionately urged voters, Forget Cuomo and put Zohran at the top of your ballot for a transformative future! Following Mamdani’s decisive primary win and Andrew Cuomo’s concession, Surka posted a jubilant photo with the candidate, captioning it with uncontained excitement: We did it, New York! Together, we’ve ignited a movement for change!

Backlash Erupts in U.S. and India Over Mamdani’s NYC Mayor Run

Former President Donald Trump unleashed a scathing attack on Zohran Mamdani, slamming his progressive politics and targeting his appearance and voice.

The Democrats have gone too far! Zohran Mamdani, a full-blown Communist radical, just won the Democratic primary and is poised to become NYC’s mayor.

We’ve seen left-wing extremists before, but this is beyond absurd,” Trump posted on Truth Social, adding, He looks awful, his voice is irritating, and he’s not exactly a genius.

Mamdani also faced Islamophobic backlash, with critics baselessly accusing him of pushing for Sharia law, while far-right commentator and Trump supporter Laura Loomer stoked fear, warning of “another 9/11 if he leads.

New Yorkers have forgotten the 9/11 victims killed by Muslims. Now a Muslim Communist could run NYC. Get out while you still can, Loomer posted in a series of inflammatory X posts.

While Zohran Mamdani proudly showcases his Indian heritage by weaving Hindi and Bangla into his campaign materials, resurfaced videos of him criticizing BJP policies and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have sparked fierce controversy.

BJP MP Kangana Ranaut reposted an old clip of the self-proclaimed socialist allegedly protesting the Babri Masjid demolition, questioning his cultural and religious identity with a jab, stating he sounds more Pakistani than Indian.

On X, she wrote, His mother, Mira Nair, is one of India’s finest filmmakers, a Padmashri recipient, a cherished daughter of Bharat, now based in New York. She married Mehmood Mamdani, a distinguished author of Gujarati descent, yet their son, named Zohran, comes off more Pakistani than Indian.

Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi also slammed the Democratic leader, remarking, When Mamdani speaks, Pakistan’s PR team gets a day off. India doesn’t need foes with ‘allies’ like him peddling falsehoods from New York.

Why Is the Internet Split Over Mamdani’s NYC Mayor Run?

Zohran Mamdani’s rapid ascent and the intense polarization surrounding his NYC mayoral campaign arise from his bold policy stances, digitally savvy outreach, and outspoken views on global issues.

Unlike Andrew Cuomo, who relied on well-funded political action committees, Mamdani’s campaign thrives on grassroots enthusiasm and a knack for viral social media engagement, featuring bilingual and trilingual content in Hindi, Bangla, and Spanish complete with a playful blooper clip to counter claims of using AI to polish his Spanish fluency.

However, his vocal criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza and support for the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement have sparked controversy, with some accusing him of anti-Semitism, while certain pro-Palestinian groups fault him for not fully rejecting Israel’s right to exist.
