WASHINGTON/ISLAMABAD, June 18 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump will host Pakistan’s military chief, General Asim Munir, for a high-profile lunch at the White House on Wednesday, per Trump’s official itinerary.
This unprecedented one-on-one summit between a Pakistani military leader and a U.S. president risks stirring tensions with India, following the fiercest clashes between the nuclear-armed neighbors in decades, which Trump claims credit for helping to de-escalate.
Pakistan's foreign ministry and the military's media wing did not respond to inquiries about the White House meeting, and the topics to be discussed at the press-closed luncheon remained undisclosed.
Last month, Trump claimed that India and Pakistan had reached a ceasefire following U.S.-brokered negotiations, stating that hostilities ceased after he encouraged both nations to prioritize trade over conflict.
Despite Trump’s claims, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi informed him late Tuesday that the recent ceasefire resulted from direct military-to-military dialogue between India and Pakistan, not U.S. intervention, according to India’s top diplomat.
Meanwhile, Pakistan publicly expressed gratitude to Washington for what it described as valuable mediation efforts last month. Though currently under civilian rule, Pakistan’s powerful military — which has directly governed the country for over three decades since its 1947 independence — continues to exert significant influence over national affairs.
