At least 56 Palestinians were killed across Gaza since dawn on Monday, including 38 who were desperately seeking food at aid distribution points most of them in Rafah, the epicenter of devastation in southern Gaza, medical sources told Al Jazeera.

The bloodshed unfolded at distribution centers run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF)  a U.S. and Israeli-backed organization operating within Israeli-controlled zones. Critics have denounced these sites as “human slaughterhouses,” where desperate civilians are lured into deadly traps under the guise of aid.

As missile fire continues to fly between Israel and Iran, the United Nations’ top human rights official sharply condemned Israel’s relentless assault on the besieged enclave, where civilians are being killed in growing numbers with no sign of reprieve.

Speaking on Monday, UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk condemned Israel’s military campaign, stating that its "means and methods of warfare are causing horrifying and unconscionable suffering" for Palestinians in Gaza. After more than 20 months of relentless attacks, Gaza health officials report that at least 55,362 people — including thousands of children have been killed.

Since the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) began its operations, over 300 people have been killed and more than 2,000 injured near its aid distribution sites, which have become increasingly dangerous.

Eyewitnesses Heba Jouda and Mohammed Abed told the Associated Press that Israeli forces opened fire on crowds at around 4 a.m. near the Flag Roundabout in Rafah — just meters from the GHF center  a location that has become a repeated flashpoint for deadly violence.

Three additional Palestinians seeking aid were reported killed in northern Gaza, with two more casualties in a separate strike on Gaza City.

Addressing the Human Rights Council in Geneva during his annual report, UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk issued a scathing rebuke of Israel’s conduct, declaring: “Israel has weaponized food and deliberately obstructed life-saving humanitarian aid.”

He called for “immediate and impartial investigations” into the deadly assaults on civilians struggling to access food at distribution centers. Türk also condemned inflammatory rhetoric from senior Israeli officials, warning that such “disturbing, dehumanizing language evokes the darkest chapters of human history.

Palestinians Facing Severe Food Crisis Amid Shrinking Aid Access

Israel’s ongoing blockade has severely restricted the entry of food, medicine, and other essentials into Gaza, sparking fears of an impending famine. No alternative aid routes have been permitted, effectively tightening the siege.

Major humanitarian organizations and the United Nations have declined to work with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), criticizing it for serving Israeli military interests over genuine humanitarian needs.

Aid distribution hubs have been temporarily shut down following repeated outbreaks of deadly violence in Rafah and the Netzarim Corridor, where Israeli forces reportedly opened fire on civilians seeking aid.

Reporting from Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum described the situation as one of “chaos and despair.”
“Countless Palestinians are now faced with an impossible choice — remain at home and starve, or risk death for a bag of flour,” he reported.
