Pune’s Tragic Indrayani River Bridge Disaster: NDRF Officially Ends Rescue Efforts at Kundamala Site After Confirming All Missing Persons Accounted For in Heart-Wrenching Operation

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) officially declared the termination of rescue operations following the tragic collapse of an iron bridge over the Indrayani River, as all missing individuals were successfully accounted for late last night. “With the confirmation that no persons remain unaccounted for, the district administration has instructed the cessation of search and rescue activities,” the NDRF’s statement detailed.

The catastrophic incident occurred at Kundmala, a scenic yet relatively undiscovered tourist destination located approximately 30 kilometers from Pune, near Talegaon Dabhade in Maval taluka of the district.

The bridge, carrying over 150 tourists at the time, gave way, resulting in the loss of four lives and injuries to 50 others. The collapse has brought attention to the safety concerns of infrastructure at offbeat tourist sites, prompting local authorities to review safety measures in the area.

District Collector Jitendra Dudi revealed that the NDRF sprang into action, arriving at the scene in a mere 20 minutes after the distress call. The devastating bridge collapse left 50 tourists battered, with 18 critically injured and rushed to hospitals for urgent care.

In a heartfelt response, the state government pledged a substantial Rs 5 lakh ex gratia payment to the families of the four lives tragically lost and vowed to cover every penny of the medical costs for those fighting to recover from their injuries.

The ill-fated bridge, a crumbling 30-year-old structure meant solely for pedestrians, was recklessly used by two-wheelers, fatally undermining its stability.

Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan disclosed that tenders for a desperately needed new bridge had been approved, but relentless rains stalled the critical construction, paving the way for this heart-wrenching tragedy.

Crowds of tourists flocked to Kundmala, drawn by the swollen Indrayani River, its surging waters fueled by relentless monsoon rains, showcasing the area’s stunning natural gorge, mesmerizing whirlpools, and cascading waterfalls. Just days earlier, District Collector Jitendra Dudi had issued strict prohibitory orders, imploring the public to steer clear of water bodies during the treacherous monsoon season.
