On a thrilling Day 2 of the second Test, India, led by their electrifying captain Shubman Gill, seized complete control with a breathtaking, record-demolishing double century that etched his name among cricketing immortals.

The 25-year-old prodigy’s monumental 269 fueled India’s colossal first-innings total of 587, establishing an unassailable lead and cementing his status as one of the game’s brightest stars. By stumps, England were left shell-shocked at 77 for 3, staring down a mammoth 510-run deficit with an uphill battle ahead.

Gill’s extraordinary 269, his career-best and a statistical marvel, shattered long-standing Indian records in overseas Tests, surpassing the legendary benchmarks set by icons like Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, and Sunil Gavaskar, while rewriting history in only his second Test as captain with a dazzling array of elite milestones.

"I worked on a few things before the series," Gill said after the day's play. "Looking at the results, they are working for me."

Here are the monumental records shattered by captain Shubman Gill in Birmingham:

Biggest score by an Indian captain in Test cricket history

Shubman Gill’s colossal 269 has claimed the record for the highest score by an Indian Test captain, surpassing Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 254 against South Africa in 2019. It marks only the second double century by an Indian captain in an overseas Test, following Kohli’s 200 in Antigua in 2016.

Record in England and outside Asia

In England, Shubman Gill’s remarkable 269 has set a new benchmark as the highest score by an Indian batter, eclipsing Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 at The Oval in 1979 and Rahul Dravid’s 217 in 2002. Additionally, his 269 surpasses Sachin Tendulkar’s 241* in Sydney in 2004, claiming the record for the highest Test score by an Indian outside Asia.

Among India's All-Time Best

Shubman Gill’s monumental 269 ranks as the third-highest Test score by an Indian in an away match, trailing only Virender Sehwag’s 309 (Multan, 2004) and Rahul Dravid’s 270 (Rawalpindi, 2004), and stands as the seventh-highest Test score for India across all venues. Additionally, Gill joined an elite group as the fifth batter ever, alongside Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, and Chris Gayle (the only non-Indian), to achieve double centuries in both Test and ODI formats.

Historic Feat at Edgbaston

At Edgbaston, Shubman Gill’s 269 stands as the third-highest score by a visiting batter, surpassed only by Graeme Smith’s 277 (2003) and Zaheer Abbas’s 274 (1971). It also ranks as the eighth-highest score by a touring batter in England overall.

Elite Milestone in Captaincy Journey

Gill joins an exclusive group of seven players to score centuries in each of their first two Tests as captain, following Indian legends Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli. At 25 years and 298 days, he becomes the second-youngest Indian captain to smash a double century, trailing only MAK Pataudi. Among captains, only Graeme Smith achieved a double ton in England at a younger age, doing so twice in 2003 at age 22.

India's 250-plus scores in away Tests:

270 – Rahul Dravid vs PAK (Rawalpindi, 2004)

269 – Shubman Gill vs ENG (Edgbaston, 2025)

254 – Sehwag vs PAK (Lahore, 2006)

25y 298d - Shubman Gill vs ENG, Edgbaston, 2025

26y 189d - Sachin Tendulkar vs NZ, Ahmedabad, 1999

27y 260d - Virat Kohli vs WI, North Sound, 2016

Among Indian captains, only Virat Kohli, with seven double centuries, surpasses Gill, but the young skipper’s 269 carries unmatched prestige as the first-ever double ton by an Indian captain in SENA nations, achieved outside the subcontinent.
